Sulfur concrete SulRock is a universal mineral binder, that replaces most of the known Portland cements, having exceptional mechanical, chemical, electrical, hydraulic and thermal properties.

The method of production consists of system of excellent dispersion of sulfur and reforming reagents during its processing, which results in the binder being ideally homogeneous throughout the mass of reformed sulfur.

Raw sulfur recovered from refining of gas and oil is subjected to the reformation process without the need for purification, filtration and solidification. The sulfur reforming process can be conducted at the place of sulfur extraction and/or place of transport and retention.

The range of SulRock concrete applications includes the following sections of construction industry:

  1. Construction of surfaces of roads and highways, hermetic pavement of airports, bridges, viaducts and other ground transportation structures in any climatic conditions of the world.
  2. Construction of membrane and gravity dams, reducing their masses, volumes and reinforcement, port quays, waterways and other hydrotechnical constructions, especially those requiring resistance to chemical corrosion and water permeability.
  3. Offshore operating platforms, especially their foundation structure, subject to aggressive chemical devastation.
  4. Mining tunnel support and anti-filter casing of sidewalks, digs, tunnels and extraction chambers. Construction of permanent or temporary housing by means of in situ concreting and / or reinforcing with mesh or rods.
  5. Water and gas proof underground screens. Screening barriers for construction excavations replacing Larsen’s walls, underground tanks.
  6. Thermal insulation structures for residential and industrial buildings. Prefabricated construction of buildings to achieve the highest savings in heating energy.
  7. Large diameter sewer and water pipes with strengths far exceeding traditional concrete pipes.
  8. Railway sleepers, traction and high voltage poles, power installations requiring electrical insulation.
  9. Shelters and storage structures for highly toxic and radioactive materials on the surface of the earth and in mining excavations. Containment of toxic objects under seawater. Insulation of objects and areas against toxic impurities.
  10. Special constructions resistant to seismic activities in areas threatened by mining damage, earthquakes and exposed to dynamic destruction of all kinds.
  11. Coatings sprayed on any steel or concrete structure to protect against moisture, corrosion, aggressive substances, salts or groundwater.

 

The use of SulRock concrete in road construction can also serve for the construction of new roads and highways as well as for the reconstruction of roads and streets without replacing existing pavements, both asphalt and concrete or sandy and gravel.

  • Existing, old road surface, even cracked, is an excellent base for paving the new surface with our material, leaving the intact subfloor only conducive the stability of new road.
  • The material is ideally suited to overlay on EVERY type of road pavement currently used. Moreover, between asphalt surface and SulRock a local mixing sphere occurs due to plasticisation at the temperature of 135oC while overlaying asphalt road, resulting in a homogeneous combination of the two materials.
  • The first layer of the new sulfur concrete road pavement can be made “flexible” by choosing the right binder formulation, while maintaining a pressure resistance rating of up to 65 MPa, while providing high resistance to dynamic loads and vibration due to vibration absorption properties.
  • The second layer of the SulRock road pavement is chemically bonded to the “penetrating and sealing” layer, creating an exceptionally durable surface with a pressure resistance rating of 70 MPa and more while creating homogeneous structure.
  • Repairs made from sulfur concrete, with careful care, become invisible to the road user.
  • New road surfaces are not subject to deformation due to warm weather conditions, as the surface deformation can only occur at a temperature over 135°C.
  • Road surfaces made of sulfur concrete can have interesting colors because of the possibility of staining the material in the mass as well as roughness of the surface can be adjusted. The water can be drained by making a corrugated surface of the road, for example on curves.
  • The ability to give the texture of the paved surface can be used to reduce aquaplaning.
  • The material is not permeable to water and gases. So it is not subject to water soaking and ice cracking (the 300 cycles test does not show any damage to the samples), and because it has good thermal properties (the 10 cm layer of SulRock corresponds to the 100 cm layer of concrete), it eliminates frosting of subsoil, preventing from winter surface domes, that road servicing companies complain about.
  • SulRock, with the higher plastic properties, makes water dampening more difficult and thus limiting settling of ice on the surface of the road which eliminates the need for preventive salt spraying before frost.
  • Sulfur concrete is resistant to chemical aggression, so salt spraying, aggressive atmospheres, or oil spills do not change its properties.
  • Our material makes it possible to make pavements in rainy seasons and during the largest frosts, extending the road construction season for the entire year.
  • SulRock enables immediate operation of the pavement without the need for a maturation process like concrete, and the normative strength is obtained after a few hours. It does not require detours because the surface made at night can be operated from the wound.
  • The material can be prepared in a container plant moving along with the progress of the work on a particular section of road, to eliminate the expensive transport of materials on extensive construction sites.
  • The use of our material for the construction of culverts and small bridges allows them to be operated after 12 hours from execution.
  • SulRock has a rare property of maintaining high strength properties even with cheap sand aggregates, and the ability to penetrate cracked, damaged pavement, joining them together.
  • Our material can be recycled without loss of mechanical, chemical properties or aging time, and any repairs and overlays are not disassembled by bonding the sulfur concrete to the repaired material in a manner similar to plastic welding.
  • The material is completely inert to the environment and does not emit any harmful or even carcinogenic substances like asphalt in hot weather.
  • According to US research, the binder production, including the sulfur extraction, consumes one quarter of the energy needed to produce an adequate amount of Portland cement.
  • Roads made of our material are less expensive than traditional ones in construction and operation.

 

SulRock LLC is the exclusive owner of SulRock polymeric binder production technology which is a thermoplastic binder for mixing with aggregates and is a subject to wide range of applications, e.g road and bridge construction.

RESISTANCE TO RADIATION

The linear attenuation factor of radioactive radiation for SulRock is 0,45. This number represents great resistance of our material for radiation and can be widely used in nuclear wastes disposal market. Typically used expensive lead has attenuation factor equal to 0,64. Based on this numbers 10 cm of lead wall can be substituted with 14 cm of SulRock in construction of radioactive barriers.
